Guzheng

Guzheng is a Chinese plucked zither tuned in a major pentatonic scale. It has a large, resonant soundboard. Components are often made from wood for structural or decorative reasons. The most common guzheng has 21 strings, it can have nylon steel strings, steel strings, silk strings, etc., depending on the genre. Guzheng players often wear a fingerpick made from materials such as plastic, resin or tortoiseshell on both hands.

Pipa

Pipa is a traditional plucked string instrument from East Asia, with a history of over 2,000 years in China. The instrument that was first referred to as the “pipa” appeared around the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). In the 20th century, pipa underwent further improvements, leading to the modern version we see today. The modern pipa has four metal strings and 31 frets, allowing for the performance of semitones. When played, it incorporates techniques similar to those of the guitar, using all the fingers of the right hand to produce sound through artificial nails.

Erhu

Erhu is a Chinese two-stringed bowed musical instrument. It can be traced back to proto-Mongolic instruments which first appeared in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907). It is used as a solo instrument as well as in small ensembles and large orchestras. It is the most popular of the huqin family of traditional bowed string instruments used by various ethnic groups of China. As a very versatile instrument, the erhu is used in both traditional and contemporary music arrangements, such as pop, rock and jazz.

Hulusi

Hulusi is a free reed wind instrument from China, Vietnam, and Myanmar, played also by the indigenous people of Assam. It is held vertically and has three bamboo pipes that pass through a Calabash gourd wind chest; the center pipe has finger holes and the outer two are typically drone pipes. It is not uncommon for a hulusi to have only one drone pipe while the second outer pipe is merely ornamental. The drone pipe has a finger hole which allows it to be stopped. It has gained nationwide popularity throughout China and is also used by various indigenous ethnic groups of Assam; similar to the popularity of the harmonica in the West, and “improved” versions have been produced outside the indigenous realms.
