China Institute Calligraphy and Music Meetup (March)

Step into a world where tradition meets artistry, and ancient culture resonates with the busy life in New York City! China Institute cordially invites you to this monthly program for a mesmerizing evening of traditional Chinese music and the enchanting world of calligraphy.

Listen to the performance of the unique Chinese instruments, and feel the charm of Chinese music combined with practicing Chinese calligraphy with a master calligrapher. Take the chance to interact with our calligrapher, musicians and fellow cultural lovers too!

No previous experience of calligraphy is required. Ink, paper, and brush will be provided onsite. Join like-minded friends to enjoy wine and tea, practice calligraphy, and listen to music. We look forward to a wonderful evening with you!

Refreshments will be served.

Yi Su
Yi Su

Yi Su, also named Yijin, is member of China Calligraphers Association and Northern America Chinese Calligraphy Association. During her twenty years of practice, Su’s calligraphy works have won numerous awards and been selected for various exhibitions. Her works also appear frequently on major media. Su had her solo exhibition in Pace University Gallery in New York in 2015, and created her calligraphy art studio “BIMO Theory” in 2020.

A descendant of Su Shi (1037-1101), renowned poet, scholar, and calligrapher in Song dynasty, Su learnt mainly from ancient calligraphy masters like Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, Mi Fu, Wang Duo. Su is skillful of writing various script styles, among which she is most passionate about “small regular script” and “large cursive script”.

Jiaying Ling
Jiaying (Sunnie) Ling 凌佳颖

Jiaying (Sunnie) Ling is a graduate student at Bard College Conservatory of Music, pursuing her Master of Arts degree in Chinese Music and Culture, specializing in Guzheng Performance. Sunnie started to learn Guzheng at the age of 10. She studies Guzheng with Professor Zhou Wang from China Central Conservatory of Music and Master Wang Changyuan. She won the gold prize in Yue Fu Liang Jiang Folk Master Music Festival of 2023. Living in the U.S. for over 10 years, Sunnie has been teaching Guzheng and promoting Chinese music and culture in public schools and universities.

Hiu Min Chan
Hiu Man Chan 陳曉文

Freelance musician of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, first-year Suona and Guanzi major student of Master Degree Program in Chinese Music and Cultural Arts at Bard College. He achieved Silver Award in the Senior Professional Category of the 4th Singapore Nanyang International Music Competition for Suona.

Mr. Chan has graduated from Bachelor of Music (Honors) degree at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he pursued dual specializations in Suona and Guanzi. Mr. Chan has extensive experience in performing both locally and internationally. At the end of 2018, he performed in Singapore with the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra. In 2019, he traveled to Toronto and performed as soloist for the Suona concerto "Watching Yangge." In 2022, he performed "Lo Ting" at the Twenty Alpha "20α 20220716" concert, which was rebroadcasted by the Hong Kong Community Radio. In 2023, Mr. Chan was awarded the Chinese Music Merit Scholarship by Bard College in the United States. He is embarking on a master's degree program under the tutelage of Master Yazhi Guo.
