About Feng Qi
Feng Qi 冯契

Feng Qi 冯契 (1915-1995) is a prestigious Modern Chinese philosopher and historian of philosophy. Feng was the founder of the Department of Philosophy, East China Normal University, Shanghai. Firmly believing that “whatever the situation, one should always keep one’s mind free”, Feng focused his lifelong effort on the time-honored problem of how to “transform knowledge to wisdom” and tried to solve it by constructing what he calls “epistemology in a broad sense.” He contributed original philosophical thinking to contemporary China and the whole world, which are mainly embodied in his “Three Treatises on Wisdom”, including Knowing the World and Knowing Oneself, The Dialectics of Logical Thinking, and Human Freedom and the True, the Good and the Beautiful, and his two works on the History of Chinese Philosophy, including The Logical Development of Ancient Chinese Philosophy and The Revolutionary Process of Modern Chinese Philosophy. Feng Qi’s theory of wisdom comprehensively integrates Marxist, Chinese and Western philosophical traditions in the search for the values of truth, goodness and beauty.  Deeply engaging philosophy with the ultimate aspirations of mankind, it gives the brilliant color once lost back to philosophy in modern times.
