On March 24, 1902, Zhou Shuren (Lu Xun) embarked on the steamship “Dazhen Maru” from Nanjing to study in Japan. His fellow passenger, Chen Hengke, would later influence Lu Xun’s artistic endeavors.
On August 16, 1910, Hu Shi and others set sail from Shanghai to the United States. Y.R. Chao, a fellow traveler, played a pivotal role in the formation of Hu Shi’s ideas on literary reform, forming a lifelong friendship.
On August 17, 1923, graduates including Xu Dishan, Xie Wanying (Bing Xin), Tao Ling, Li Simian from Yenching University, and Li Shutian, Chen Lifu from Beiyang University, along with graduates like Gu Yiqiao, Wu Wenzao, Wu Zhuo, Wu Jingchao, Liang Shiqiu, Sun Liren, Zhang Zhongfu from Tsinghua University, sailed to the United States on the steamship Jackson for further studies.
At this lecture, Prof. Shen Weiwei will trace the footsteps of these literary figures on their overseas journeys 100 years ago and explore the impact of these figures on the literary landscapes in China.
1902年3月24日,周树人(鲁迅)乘日轮“大贞丸”号由南京出发,去日本留学。同船人陈衡恪影响了日后成为鲁迅的美术活动。
1910年8月16日,胡适等自上海乘船赴美。同船人赵元任激发了胡适文学改良思想的形成,并结下终生的友谊。
1923年8月17日,燕京大学毕业生许地山(落花生)、谢婉莹(冰心)、陶玲、李嗣绵,北洋大学毕业生李书田、陈立夫等,与清华学校一九二三届毕业生顾一樵(毓琇)、吴文藻、吴卓、吴景超、梁实秋、孙立人、张忠绂等,自上海乘杰克逊总统号邮轮赴美留学。
