The Renwen Society at China Institute is honored to present a special lecture on Professor Chen Congzhou (1918–2000), widely regarded as the father of modern Chinese Landscape Architecture and Art. A scholar of rare breadth, Chen was not only a pioneering Landscape Architect and theorist, but also a poet, painter, calligrapher, and architectural historian. He once described the Chinese garden as “a poetic and picturesque composite of architecture, landscape, and vegetation”—a vision he embodied in both his writings and creations.
Professor Yue Feng, Chen’s last formal disciple and the author of Chen Congzhou: A Biography, will explore the life and legacy of his mentor. From Chen’s early literary achievements—including compiling the first modern biography of the poet Xu Zhimo—to his cultural advocacy and preservation work in traditional architecture, Chen’s scholarship bridged the classical and the modern, the local and the global.
Particularly notable is his collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the 1970s, which led to the creation of the Astor Chinese Garden Court (明轩), a masterpiece of Chinese classical garden design in the heart of New York. Chen’s deep friendship with architect I.M. Pei and his commitment to cultural exchange made him a vital figure in bringing Chinese aesthetics to the world stage.
This lecture will explore five themes: Chen’s biography; his broad accomplishments in Chinese cultural arts; his work in landscape architecture preservation; his international collaborations, especially in New York; and his lasting influence on the theory and practice of Chinese Landscape Architecture.
陈从周先生（1918-2000），名郁文，字从周，是中国当代杰出的园林艺术大师、园林学家、古建筑学家、书画家、诗人，被学界誉为”中国现代园林之父”。陈从周先生曾以诗性的语言阐释中国园林：”中国园林是由建筑、山水、花木等组合而成的一个综合艺术品，富有诗情画意。”其创立的园林理论体系与卓越的造园实践，是明计成之后又一座高峰，开创了现代中国园林的新境界，实为中国园林艺术发展史上继往开来的里程碑。
此次是华美人文学社首次专题介绍陈从周先生，而陈从周先生与纽约的文化渊源可追溯至20世纪中叶。作为中国园林艺术的杰出代表，他早在1970年代便与纽约大都会艺术博物馆进行深度合作，最终促成”明轩”这一中国古典园林艺术瑰宝在异域的完美呈现。这一跨越东西方的文化对话，不仅开创了中国传统园林走向西方世界的先例，更成为中美文化交流的重要里程碑。先生以精湛的中国园林思想向西方世界展现了中国传统艺术的美妙，为中华文化在国际舞台的传播作出了不可磨灭的贡献。
陈从周先生的学术成就远不止于园林艺术领域。作为一位学贯中西的学者，他在中国文化诸多领域皆有斐然的成就——1949年编撰印行的《徐志摩年谱》，是首部中国现代文学家的传记、更是现代文学史上首部系统研究徐志摩生平的学术著作；他倡导并亲自主持了海宁硖石徐志摩墓园的重建，以”诗人之墓”的独特设计，寄托对这位姻亲的深切缅怀，展现出一位学者守护文化记忆的担当。在书画艺术方面，陈从周先生早年便成为张大千先生的入室弟子，深得大风堂笔墨精髓。他的中国画将传统文人画的笔墨情趣与园林营造的空间美学完美融合，以”以画构园、以园入画”的独特手法，开创出兼具文人书卷气息与园林意趣的文人画风格。
华美人文学会特邀陈从周先生最后的入室弟子、中国第一部园林学家传记《陈从周传》的著者乐峰教授于美东时间5月31日晚8时至9时半（北京时间6月1日早8时至9时半) 做专题讲座，介绍陈从周先生的生平与学术贡献，内容共分为五个部分：
第一部分将详细介绍陈从周先生的生平。
第二部分将探讨陈从周先生中国传统文化的博大精深，他在诗词创作、书画、戏曲评论以及文物鉴定等多个领域均有极高造诣。
第三部分将聚焦陈从周先生对中国古建筑、古园林的保护。
第四部分是关于陈从周先生与”明轩”的渊源及其与国际建筑大师贝聿铭的深厚情谊。
第五部分简述陈从周先生的中国园林学术理论与营造实践及其影响与贡献。
