China Institute Calligraphy and Music Meetup (April)

Step into a world where tradition meets artistry, and ancient culture resonates with the busy life in New York City! China Institute cordially invites you to this monthly program for a mesmerizing evening of traditional Chinese music and the enchanting world of calligraphy.

Listen to the performance of the unique Chinese instruments, and feel the charm of Chinese music combined with practicing Chinese calligraphy with a master calligrapher. Take the chance to interact with our calligrapher, musicians and fellow cultural lovers too!

No previous experience of calligraphy is required. Ink, paper, and brush will be provided onsite. Join like-minded friends to enjoy wine and tea, practice calligraphy, and listen to music. We look forward to a wonderful evening with you!

Meetup Hostess and Artists

Yi Su

Yi Su, also named Yijin, is member of China Calligraphers Association and Northern America Chinese Calligraphy Association. During her twenty years of practice, Su’s calligraphy works have won numerous awards and been selected for various exhibitions. Her works also appear frequently on major media. Su had her solo exhibition in Pace University Gallery in New York in 2015, and created her calligraphy art studio “BIMO Theory” in 2020.

A descendant of Su Shi (1037-1101), renowned poet, scholar, and calligrapher in Song dynasty, Su learnt mainly from ancient calligraphy masters like Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, Mi Fu, Wang Duo. Su is skillful of writing various script styles, among which she is most passionate about “small regular script” and “large cursive script”.

Xi Lu

Xi Lu, who has been learning Pipa since she was four years old, graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music with a major in Ethnomusicology. She had a one-year exchange program at the Geneva Conservatory of Music in Switzerland in her junior year and is now a member of the Bard Conservatory of Music‘s US-China program student majoring in musicology in the first year. In 2018, she played in the Temple of Heaven served The State Council and the director of the Chinese Institute of Literature and History ; In 2018, she played the pipa for the fifth generation descendant of the John Rockefeller family ; Then she participated in the National Center for the Performing Arts Spring Festival Concert in 2019 ; In 2020, starring in the opening ceremony of Nanjing Tencent Star Awards; In 2022, she performed as a pipa soloist in “China-now” at Lincoln Center in New York.

Wenjun Lu

Wenjun Lu is a third-year pipa student in the undergraduate double-degree program at the Bard College Conservatory of Music. Through Bard’s partnership with the Central Conservatory of Music, she studies Pipa under CCOM Professor Zhang Qiang.

Ke Xilin Ke

Ke Xilin Ke is a young Konghou inheritor, she started her music journal with professor Wang Caizhen for Guzheng playing, then became a Konghou player studied with Professor Cui Junzhi. She graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music Affiliated Middle School, majoring in Konghou, and is now a freshman majoring in Konghou at Bard Conservatory of Music in the United States. After graduating from high school, Ke held a Konghou Report graduation charity Concert in Xiamen Wuyuan Concert Hall.
