Director of Marketing

Overview:
Founded in New York City in 1926 by American educators John Dewey, Paul Monroe, and Chinese scholars Hu Shi (胡適) and Kuo Ping-Wen (郭秉文), China Institute in America is an internationally-renowned U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to deepening the world’s understanding of China through programs in art, business, cuisine, culture, and education.

About the Role:
The Director of Marketing develops and implements communications and marketing strategies to meet China Institute in America’s objectives. This position is the steward of China Institute’s brand and leads the team in charge of executing branding, outreach, partnerships, advertising, content creation, and media relations initiatives. The Director of Marketing is a strategist with superior management skills and the ability to contribute to the Institute’s advancement. It requires a hands-on, detail-oriented leader who can get hands-on and advance both strategic and tactical goals. This position reports to the CEO.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, strengthen, and increase recognition of China Institute in America’s brand, classes, programs, events, exhibitions, and initiatives
  • Develop, direct, and implement strategic marketing plans (including advertising, special events, promotional materials) to amplify China Institute’s positioning and to achieve its objectives
  • Review and analyze marketing performance against programs and plans to determine effectiveness of marketing strategies
  • Manage marketing budget
  • Manage external PR agency and handle some media outreach for programs and conferences, grow personal relationships with Chinese and Western media
  • Produce and execute creative marketing and advertising campaigns to drive School enrollment, attract audiences for China Institute programs and Gallery exhibitions, as well as recognition of the organization’s history, impact, and cultural leadership
  • Maintain website to highlight content and reflect the breadth and impact of China Institute programs, events, and initiatives
  • Direct creation of thought leadership content for website and social media and supervise the development of infographics, videos, and other visuals for social media and China Institute website
  • Oversee strategies and content for China Institute’s social media accounts
  • Collaborate with Development department on appeals, galas, and other initiatives to help contribute to annual fundraising goals
  • Develop messages that clearly articulate China Institute’s unique positioning and engage target audiences
  • Prepare executive and trustee communications including presentations, speeches, and social content

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree a plus
  • 6+ years of professional marketing and communications experience, with 2+ years of management experience preferably in non-profit organizations
  • Experience managing integrated marketing and fundraising campaigns including print and digital components
  • Experience creating lasting partnerships to advance organizational goals
  • Experience creating and managing content, editorials, blogposts, etc.
  • Experience managing a website with thought leadership content
  • Demonstrated facility with content management systems, email marketing platforms AdWords, Adobe Creative Suite, Constant Contact, and MS Office
  • Be curious and/or knowledgeable about Chinese culture and history
  • Knowledge of branding fundamentals and general design concepts with ability to make evaluative judgments about creative content
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with background in content marketing fundamentals
  • Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong social media skills
