Sidney Gamble’s China Revisited: Photographs by Sidney D. Gamble from 1917 to 1931

Edited by Nancy Jervis
Introduction by Jonathan D. Spence

This catalogue presents a selection of photographs from the Gamble collection. Sidney Gamble was one of the first empirical social scientists and took many pictures to illustrate his research in China during tumultuous periods: between the Imperial era that ended in 1911 with the fall of the Qing (Manchu) dynasty and the chaotic Republican period that followed. The images selected in this catalogue represent the collection as a whole and provide a context for today’s China as depicted by contemporary Chinese photographers.
