China Institute Calligraphy and Music Meetup (January)

Step into a world where tradition meets artistry, and ancient culture resonates with the busy life in New York City! China Institute cordially invites you to this monthly program for a mesmerizing evening of traditional Chinese music and the enchanting world of calligraphy.

Listen to the performance of the unique Chinese instruments, and feel the charm of Chinese music combined with practicing Chinese calligraphy with a master calligrapher. Take the chance to interact with our calligrapher, musicians and fellow cultural lovers too!

No previous experience of calligraphy is required. Ink, paper, and brush will be provided onsite. Join like-minded friends to enjoy wine and tea, practice calligraphy, and listen to music. We look forward to a wonderful evening with you!

Refreshments will be served.

Meetup Hostess and Artists

Yi Su
Yi Su

Yi Su, also named Yijin, is member of China Calligraphers Association and Northern America Chinese Calligraphy Association. During her twenty years of practice, Su’s calligraphy works have won numerous awards and been selected for various exhibitions. Her works also appear frequently on major media. Su had her solo exhibition in Pace University Gallery in New York in 2015, and created her calligraphy art studio “BIMO Theory” in 2020.

A descendant of Su Shi (1037-1101), renowned poet, scholar, and calligrapher in Song dynasty, Su learnt mainly from ancient calligraphy masters like Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, Mi Fu, Wang Duo. Su is skillful of writing various script styles, among which she is most passionate about “small regular script” and “large cursive script”.

Yixin Wang_guzheng
Yixin Wang

Yixin Wang started playing Guzheng at the age of three in Shanghai, China. She won her first competition at the age of seven. After moving to Houston in 2014, she joined the Houston Traditional Chinese Music Group and the Texas Philharmonic Folk Orchestra and became a board member and section leader in 2017. Since then, Yixin has performed at TEDx Sugarland, World Affair Council of Greater Houston, George Bush International Airport, Chinese Embassy, Texas A&M University, Rice University, among other music festivals and Galas.  She has also held the first traditional Chinese benefit concert in the Katy, Texas area in 2017. She dedicated a huge amount of time to popularizing and educating Chinese traditional instruments and music in America. In the year of 2019, she won the concerto competition of Bard Conservatory of Music. In 2021, she premiered the Guzheng concerto Awakening Light, composed by Dr. Xinyan Li and conducted by maestro Jindong Cai. It is the first Guzheng piece to use the modulation bridges invented by Suona virtuoso and instrument inventor Yazhi Guo for richer musical expressions. She is currently a fourth-year student in the US-China Music Institute of the Bard College Conservatory of Music, studying with Professor Zhou Wang in the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China.

Yuling Nan_Ruan
Yuling Nan

Yuling Nan was born in Daqing, Heilongjiang Province in China, and she studied Pipa until she was fifteen years old, and then studied Ruan with Professor Xu Yang until now. She entered Bard Conservatory at the age of eighteen to study for a double degree. During her time at the university, she participated in various school activities, including exchange visits. She won the Gold Medal at the 2023 Nanyang International Music Competition.

Jiayi Sun_Konghou
Jiayi Sun

Jiayi Sun is a freshman at Bard Conservatory of Music. She is from Henan, China. At the age of ten, she started to learn the piano. She started learning Konghou at the age of 16. She is currently studying Konghou with Professor Junzhi Cui.
