Chrissy Luo and her husband Tianqiao Chen live in the Bay Area with their three children. They are active philanthropists and in 2016, founded the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute (TCCI) to “improve the human experience by understanding how our brains perceive, learn and interact with the world.”
Chrissy and her husband created the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute for Neuroscience at Caltech in 2016 with a USD 115 million donation. In 2017, the couple committed CNY 500 million to create the Tianqiao Chen Institute for Translational Research, a partnership with the Zhou Liangfu Foundation, Huashan Hospital and Shanghai Mental Health Center. In October 2020, TCCI opened the Chen Frontier Lab for Applied Neurotechnology in Shanghai and the Chen Frontier Lab for AI and Mental Health was announced in July 2021. Since its inception, TCCI has supported nearly 200 neuroscience conferences and over a hundred young scientists around the world.
Chrissy is an enlightened philanthropist, who emphasizes patience, flexibility and due diligence as the hallmarks of strategic philanthropy and thoughtful giving. With her commitment to donate a total of one billion dollars to brain research, they are creating a historic initiative that will help humanity better understand ourselves and the world
Chrissy was a co-founder of Shanda Interactive Entertainment Group in 1999, a pioneer in the online gaming and online literature industries in China. Now called Shanda Group, Chrissy oversees company-wide operations, group communications, and Shanda’s timberland operations from the couple’s family office. Prior to Shanda, Chrissy was an investment banker.
To support science and education and to serve the community, Chrissy became a member of the California Academy of Sciences’ Board of Trustees in September 2022. She is also on the board of Governors at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens and a member of the China Leadership Board at the 21st Century China Center at the University of California, San Diego.
Chrissy has a Bachelor of Economics degree from the China Institute of Finance (now part of the University of International Business and Economics).
