At the dawn of the new millennium, China Institute Gallery art education program Discover China Through Art presented The Story of Red, tales and traditions celebrated during the Chinese New Year. In this special program, stories of red couplets, red paper cuts, and red firecrackers were introduced along with other stories of door gods, kitchen gods, and the Chinese zodiac. A special highlight was the portrayal of the dragon, the zodiac animal of the year 2000 and an auspicious symbol in Chinese history. The labeling for the New-Year-related artworks and objects, such as prints, couplets, festival decorations, as well as a traditional food altar in front of an immense ancestor portrait, provided background information about the Chinese New Year.
