The School of Chinese Studies at China Institute is seeking a passionate and experienced Chinese language teacher to take on dual roles within the Adult Education Programs: teaching Chinese language classes to adult learners and coordinating both academic and administrative responsibilities, including providing technical support for online classes.
Responsibilities
Teaching
- Teach 8-10 class hours per week within the Adult Education Programs, across four semesters annually. Classes are offered at various times, including daytime, evening, and weekends, both online and onsite.
- Provide one-on-one private tutoring as needed.
- Serve as a substitute teacher when required.
Managing the Private Tutoring Program
- Independently manage the Private Tutoring Program, including handling inquiries, coordinating with instructors and students, assigning instructors, scheduling sessions, reserving space, and following up as needed.
- Take the initiative to collaborate with the marketing team to promote the PT program
Academic Development & Administrative Support
- Conduct ongoing research and implement an up-to-date curriculum, including textbook selection, course design, and resource compilation.
- Maintain the program’s Google Drive platform to ensure it is current.
- Collaborate with instructors to develop new courses and maintain a teacher-sharing platform via Google Group, WeChat, or other channels.
- Collect and organize teaching materials and maintain updated folders for special courses.
- Conduct classroom observations for new instructors and courses, and provide feedback afterward.
- Perform placement assessments before each semester begins.
- Support the end-of-term evaluation process, analyze data, and offer suggestions for improvement.
- Stay informed about key developments in relevant fields by participating in professional conferences, workshops, and training sessions.
- Assist the Director of Education in overall administrative operations for the Adult Education Programs, including new initiatives and programs
- Assist in the implementation of marketing efforts, including updating the website, creating newsletters and flyers, and producing other promotional materials.
Technical Support for Online Classes
- Set up Zoom meetings for all online classes before each semester and manage Zoom accounts to ensure smooth functionality during classes.
- Train new teachers on using the Zoom platform.
- Be available for troubleshooting during class sessions each semester.
Qualification
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred, in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Chinese Language & Literature, Bilingual Education, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or related fields.
- Native-like proficiency in spoken and written Chinese.
- At least one year of teaching experience, preferably with adult learners of diverse backgrounds and age groups.
- Experience with student-centered, interactive, and communicative teaching approaches.
- Strong passion for and experience in curriculum development and course design.
- Strong academic research skills and familiarity with current developments in teaching Chinese as a second language, assessment, and program evaluation.
- Proficiency in computer and technology applications for online learning, particularly Zoom, Google Classroom, etc.
- Good command of spoken and written English.
- Experience working in an office setting is highly preferred.
